Art Toons.........

The idea behind these pieces is to resemble the grid pattern of a comic book.  This is the beginning of a series of these that I would like to put into a book form at some point.  First attempt today, I think I will incorporate some form of caption but have to give it a bit of thought first....

This one on the right was an afterthought.........using the ghost image from the images above.

The gallery show goes up on March 5th......prepping and wrapping the work for the truck today.  The opening is March 8th from 7 to  9 pm........

Small Prints.........

So these are mini prints.........around 4x6 images.  Last night I did the artbar thing at Webster hall, and worked mostly as a master printer helping the guests make their own images.  Really excellent creativity and I think they had fun making their own prints.
This weekend I am showing at a pop up market on Bleeker street in the city and am making prints to sell there.......these are some examples.  It is interesting working small, I am trying things I had not thought of and working tighter...........a nice change from my normal process.

Blue Tuesday.....

Two new ones from today.........off to the city in a few minutes to set up for this evenings QAS event....brought small sheets to work on this evening.  I am also doing some kind of pop up store in the city this weekend so I will make extras to have for that tonight I guess.

Blues

Working with blues...........a bit of red to warm up the one below.........
I think I will stick with this palate for this week and see what develops.....

I will be printing live at the QAS which takes place in Webster Hall in the city from 6 to midnight......

Feb23

off to New York today to pick up materials for........linen for painting and paper to keep the print thing going.  hand out as many cards for the show as I can as well.

the prints have reached a phase where I am starting to want the imagery to be more finished......not sure I can resolve this with the process I am using where the ink has to stay wet to print at home....if the ink were to dry I would have to print at a studio with a press.........this also has something to do with the size of the paper I am working on......

Time Exposure

time exposure.

The print above was from this morning........a few layers on this one.  I call it time exposure......as if the sun is moving in space and captured at different moments.

My good friend Andrew Welt stopped by yesterday for a visit.....he has been a great supporter of my work for many years now.  He got right to work creating a print of his own in the studio.

Feb 21st, 2013

I went to a few galleries last evening in Chelsea in NYC......saw a great presentation of Basquiat images at Gagosian gallery........I highly recommend seeing this if you are in the area.

These are the two sides of the invite designed by Art on A gallery.  I think they came out great, good energy.  There will be an "after party" after the opening on March 8 where they will be projecting images of the artworks on a wall across from the gallery, this will be really cool.

Feb 20 2013

Two images from today....feb 20th......

On the 26th I will be printing "live" at Webster Hall in NYC.  The event is called the QAS, Quarterly Art Soiree....artists, musicians, poets, all converge for an evening of whatever happens..........I will also read a couple of poems for fun.

Most of the work is ready for the show on March 8 at Art on A gallery, now I have to wrap everything up and hang the show soon.

New Voices.

I worked on this painting yesterday........this was a piece I gave up on a number of times, thought I could do something with it.............
Print from this morning.......started with the figure on the right sitting..........

I thought I had a great idea last night.....create around 100 figures and place speakers in each.....around 1 foot in height.  Each speaker would have a voice recording of an individual voice in a choir, the viewer would hear each and be able to experience the choir.  Found out it has been done.......argh!

Black and White orientation

These two images are different orientations of the piece I created today....Each one has a different story to tell I think. I was experimenting with a black and white palate........put a bit of red in for contrast.
This is the second piece I created today.  I would like to continue this project, but money is getting a bit tight, the paper is expensive and I could do several prints a day if I could afford it.  I am going to research Kickstarter, to see if there is a way I can raise funds for materials.

painting and prints.

Busy day so far.......the three prints are from today...........three very different techniques.........
This is a painting I laid the color layer in over this past week.  I think I will put it in the show in the city in March if the gallery likes it.

show prep

This is today's print......

I am working these days on finishing up the works for the show in March.  This entails fixing the edges of most of the paintings, as well as working on a couple of new pieces which I hope to show as well.
Hopefully I will find a place to show the prints soon.........

Princeton Wedge w_02 cool tool!

So I found these wedge tooks by Princeton Artist Brush..........that is what is giving me the textures in the background.  I am still using the roller to create the primary forms here.

abstract characters

Early this morning.......say around 2am I was turned onto a blog by Michael Jacobson about what he calls asemic writing (http://thenewpostliterate.blogspot.com).  The idea behind this is to create an abstract visual language which functions independent of our use of symbols to create direct communication.
I have been reading an thinking about this a bit lately, how something said is contingent on what was said before, how words need context.
So I got excited to see this work, as well as the work of my friend Marie Kazalia who is working with Kanji script in a somewhat tangential manor.

I have been experimenting with this process for many years.  The page above is a project I was working on when I first started making artwork as a way to create an abstract visual language.  I think they work on a subliminal level to unlock the potential subconscious expression of thought.
These two pieces were created today.  I had considered using the abstract script in the work itself, but thought that this concept is inherent in the image.  The interpretation of the image is subjective......even the orientation of the paper is conditional on how I perceive the intent of the original composition and how I perceive it after the creation process.
Please leave a comment if you like.............

Paintings in progress

Hi.........second post of today..........thought I would post up the new paintings in progress.  This one above was started a couple of weeks ago.....today I finished this layer. The next step is to drop in the shadows and rebuild the highlights with white.  Then the first layer of glaze begins
This is a small canvas I dropped in a couple of days ago.......simple composition
I did the workup on this one this afternoon.  I went right into the shadows, which I usually wait on a couple of days for the yellow oxide to set up a bit........but the color held so I got on with it.....
This is the basic drawing before laying in the forms as I did on the paintings above.

Cell Division..........

The first one for today makes me think of cell division.........some kind of birth allegory I think......
The exhibit in NY is going up soon..........I will visit the gallery  tomorrow and hopefully will make final selections on the work to be shown.  The opening is March 8th at Art on A gallery, 24 Ave A at first street in the Lower East Side..........

Notes.......harmony

First one this morning.........did not get a chance to print yesterday, we had a big snow storm and had to dig my way out........I was experimenting here with foreground background relationships.....creating a loose grid as the background.
The two that followed used the pigment left on the plexi.  The first idea of the road stretching back came about as I was moving the pigment around a bit.  The third one (blue foreground) came about as I used my fingers to mash up the pigment left over on 2.  This process is great for finger painting.....I have not found the perfect composition for it yet..........
